Royal Sweets – Adieu Atlanta

I can’t believe it has been two months since my last post.  I do think I have a pretty good excuse for being silent though.  In the past two months, my family and I have sold our home in Atlanta, moved cross country to just south of San Francisco and settled into a brand new home.  Oh, and I happen to be 8 months pregnant too.  Suffice it to say I have not had a moment to cook or write and I have missed it terribly.  I hope to get a few juicy posts in before the arrival of our baby girl in February.  That will be my holiday gift to you, patient reader.

But first, Atlanta deserves a proper farewell.  I lived there for 5 years, had my son there and made so many great friends.  It is also where I started this blog and first met many new food loves that will always remain near and dear to my tummy like pimento cheese, biscuits, Arnold Palmers, and deviled eggs.  And, since I am actually a samosa junkie, I would be remiss if I didn’t share with you my favorite Atlanta samosa joint, Royal Sweets.

This place mimics itself after a traditional Indian sweets shop where you can, of course, buy freshly made desserts, but also get great savory snack mixes, fresh samosas and other street food delicacies.  The two things that would always bring me back to Royal were the samosas – always fried fresh to order – and the fabulous savory snacks.  The samosas are on the larger side with a  perfectly spiced filling that smacks of tangy aamchur (dried mango powder) and fennel seeds.  The crust is always golden and crispy.  My mouth waters just thinking about these fried treats.

Even my son digs the samosas here – and he is not always a fan.  Another of his favorites at the shop is the muruku.  These salty snacks look like little coiled snakes – in fact that is what I used to call them when I was young.  They are deep fried and super duper crunchy with just a quick hit of heat and roasted cumin.  The perfect accompaniment to a steaming cup of tea.  Which they also serve at Royal, of course.

I am on the hunt for the perfect samosa in my new home.  If anyone has any recommendations, please give me a shout!  My Atlanta friends should consider themselves lucky to have Royal Sweets as part of their local dining milieu.  Please eat a fresh samosa for me next time you visit.
